On January 13, J&J LifeScan announced the launch of the OneTouch VerioSync blood glucose meter in the US. The meter sends blood glucose readings wirelessly (via Bluetooth) to the OneTouch Reveal app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The FDA originally approved the OneTouch VerioSync in February 2013, meaning the US launch comes almost a full year after approval. diaTribe was able to get a sneak peek at the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Annual Meeting and you can read our first look here. Look for diaTribe’s test drive of the OneTouch VerioSync coming up in our next issue!

We've had a chance to play with the meter and app over the last few weeks and have found both very easy to use and quite hassle free. The focus on time-in-range in the accompanying app is particularly great to see. The meter uses the existing OneTouch Verio test strips and represents a slimmed down version of the OneTouch VerioIQ. LifeScan has also preserved the excellent VerioIQ pattern recognition feature, which was a major highlight when we test drove that meter in 2012.

A “limited time offer” for the OneTouch VerioSync is currently featured at the OneTouch online store, where the meter is only $19.99 – 33% off the full price of $29.99. You can also visit the product’s webpage to watch a handy one-minute video about how the meter works and how to use it. The tagline reflects what will hopefully soon become standard in diabetes technology: “Now you can check your blood sugar results as easily as you check everything else – on your iPhone.”  The OneTouch VerioSync is definitely a step in the right direction for its easy data uploading, understandable summary displays, and well-designed accompanying iPhone app. –AB/NL
