d22 Executive Innovation Lab

SELECT A SECTION

d22 is building on six years of shared learning, connection, and strategic thinking that has helped us better understand the key levers for change within the diabetes epidemic in the U.S. At d19, we identified diabetes stigma as one of the key barriers to progress. We then explored this topic extensively at our d20 and d21 Executive Innovation Labs and, in February 2022, we launched our Stigma Program area in conjunction with the launch of our online resource for combating stigma, dStigmatize.org.

We know that addressing diabetes stigma is an essential missing element of effective diabetes care. And that is why at our d22 Executive Innovation Lab, we aim to continue building on our knowledge of this form of stigma and begin harnessing our collective power to develop creative, disruptive, and out-of-the-box solutions to addressing it.

By bringing much-needed attention to this issue, continuing to develop and refine critical tools and resources, giving participants the confidence to address stigma in their personal and collective spheres of influence, and by beginning the work to develop viable and fundable campaign ideas to address stigma, we hope to trigger the large-scale cultural shift needed to upend the status quo and truly tackle diabetes stigma.

d22 Lightning Talks: Diabetes Stigma and the Need for Disruption: October 25 (12:00 pm PT / 3:00 pm ET)

Our popular Lighting Talks (virtual and open to the public) are back to foster inspirational learning and storytelling with an exciting collection of speakers. Tackling diabetes stigma and its devastating effects will rely on courageous advocates and creative solutions. We think it’s time for a bit of disruption and we want to challenge everyone to join us in finding inspired, creative, radical, and out-of-the-box solutions. Our speakers include diabetes advocates, Renza Scibilia and Alysse Dalessandro, a master storyteller, Brian Fitzgerald, and an industry leader, Tony Pearson. Visit our d22 Lightning Talks webpage to learn more and register for the event here.

d22 Stigma Playshop: Group 1 (November 8-10, 2022 from 7:00-11:00 am PT / 10:00 am – 2:00 pm ET); Group 2 (November 16-17, 2022 from 8:00-11:00 am PT / 11:00 am – 2:00 pm ET)

Tommy Crawford and Brian Fitzgerald, the disruptive change-makers and master storytellers from Dancing Fox, will be facilitating these two exciting virtual "playshops" to help guide us towards the disruptive, creative, and out-of-the-box solutions we will need to make a real impact in addressing diabetes stigma.  The d22 Stigma Playshop will be spilt into two separate, but related, events. A smaller group (Group 1) will convene Nov 8-10 for a more intensive, focused version of the playshop that requires a larger time commitment. The following week, Nov 16-17, all of our dNetwork participants (Group 2) will be invited to participate in a slightly more condensed version of the playshop that will build on the progress made during the following week's event.

Brian Fitzgerald

Senior Story-Hacker | Dancing Fox

Brian Fitzgerald is founder and co-director with Tommy Crawford of Dancing Fox, a creative agency specializing in mischief, magic, and mind-bombs for artists and activists, helping to craft transformational stories for a more beautiful world. A lifelong activist, Brian spent 35 years with Greenpeace in roles as varied as deckhand and door-to-door canvasser to hot air balloon pilot and Communications Director. His resume proudly lists arrest for US Federal trespass at ground zero of a nuclear weapons test. He pioneered digital campaigning at Greenpeace International and collaborated in campaign and communications strategies that shifted the environmental practices of governments, corporations, and entire sectors. Thanks to one of them, somewhere in the Southern Ocean, a humpback whale named "Mister Splashy Pants" swims free from the threat of harpoons.

Tommy Crawford

Chief Mischief-Maker | Dancing Fox

Tommy Crawford is a Poet, Shamanic Storyteller, and Co-Founder and Creative Director of the international mischief-making organization, Dancing Fox.  He previously worked as Creative Director at Greenpeace International, where he led a ragtag collective of artists and activists on a mission to uncover and embody Greenpeace's organizational story (something never attempted in its 40 year history). The Story went on to become the Keystone of the organization's global 10 year strategy — helping to shift Greenpeace's approach from being "problem-led" to "narrative-led." Since setting up Dancing Fox with Brian Fitzgerald in 2016, Tommy has curated and led workshops all over the world with groups as diverse as Amnesty International, ActionAid, WWF and World Animal Protection. A culture-hacker, fountain of wild ideas, and described as "Tinkerbell" by Diatribe Foundation's CEO Jim Carroll for sprinkling "magical fairy dust wherever he goes", Tommy is passionate about helping groups to develop bold and brilliant campaigns that bring people together around a shared vision.
