Clinical Trials in Diabetes:
Working to Improve Lives

Join us to explore the world of diabetes clinical trial research and what it means for people with diabetes and the overall healthcare system. We'll delve into the opportunities and challenges of designing and conducting clinical trials and also emphasize the importance of having diverse people within these trials. The discussions will cover advancements in cell replacement therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and innovative approaches to addressing diabetes-related eye diseases, such as diabetic macular edema and other complications.

As we bring together healthcare providers and researchers in the field, this event offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the latest breakthroughs that aim to transform diabetes care. The panel will also discuss the real-life scenarios of people with diabetes wanting to join a clinical trial when facing various challenges. This conversation will convey a balance of the science behind clinical trials as well as the need to promote diversity within clinical trials; where research outcomes are representative of various cultural and socioeconomic populations living with diabetes.

After all, the diabetes therapies and technology that are available today wouldn't be in existence without the clinical trial design and people participating in them "yesterday".

Our highly-regarded speakers are Dr. Anastasia Albanese-O’Neill, JDRF International; Dr. Manuel Amador, Genentech, Inc; Dr. Anne Peters, Keck School of Medicine of USC; and Dr. Jennifer K. Sun, Joslin Diabetes Center (JDC). The panel will be moderated by Dr. Alan Moses, The diaTribe Foundation with opening remarks provided by Dr. Julie Hsieh, U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

PANELISTS

Anastasia Albanese-O’Neill, PhD, APRN, CDCES
AVP, T1D Education and Clinical Implementation, JDRF International

Anastasia Albanese-O’Neill. Ph.D., APRN/CPNP-PC, CDCES, transitioned to a career in diabetes care, education, and research in 2008. She currently serves as associate vice president, T1D education and clinical implementation at JDRF International. Albanese-O’Neill formerly served as director of diabetes education and clinic operations in the department of pediatrics at the University of Florida, where she maintained an active research portfolio and clinical practice. Her research on diabetes education, quality improvement, and diabetes technology has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Diabetes Care, Pediatric Diabetes, The Lancet, and Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics. She is the volunteer founder of a Florida based diabetes education non-profit, Diabetes Toolkit. Albanese-O’Neill has been a passionate diabetes advocate since 2002, and in this capacity has appeared at congressional hearings, the White House, and in the Florida legislature. Prior to working in diabetes care, Albanese-O’Neill was a marketing executive for Southwest Airlines. She was chosen as the 2023 Diabetes Care and Education Specialist of the Year by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. She plans to retire the moment a cure for type 1 diabetes is discovered, but not a moment sooner.

Manuel Amador, MD
Medical Director, US Medical Affairs, Ophthalmology, Genentech, Inc.

Manuel Amador is an ophthalmologist. He graduated from the Retina Fellowship at UCSD in 2019. Since then he joined Genentech in Medical Affairs and is currently working on evidence generation for the Faricimab program. Other areas he focuses on are Diabetic retinopathy and improving diversity and inclusion in clinical trials.

Anne Peters, MD
Professor of Clinical Medicine, Clinical Scholar, Keck School of Medicine of USC

Anne L. Peters, MD, is a professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. She runs diabetes centers in Beverly Hills and in underserved East Los Angeles. In addition to her clinical work, she has been a principle investigator on multiple grants, has written over 200 articles and 4 books, and has given over 1000 lectures locally, nationally and internationally. She has been on multiple guideline writing committees for the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Her major interests involve translating research findings, from lifestyle interventions to technology, to people with diabetes throughout the socioeconomic spectrum. She is a recipient of the ADA Outstanding Physician Clinician Award, the Bernardo Houssay Award from the National Minority Quality Forum and an Endocrine Society Laureate Award for Public Service.

Jennifer K. Sun, MD, MPH
Senior Investigator, Research Division, Joslin Diabetes Center (JDC)

Dr. Jennifer Sun, Associate Professor in the Harvard Department of Ophthalmology, graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, and completed ophthalmology residency and a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. From 2005-2009 she was the first program participant in the Harvard Vision Clinical Scientist K12 program and received a Masters in Public Health in 2007 at the Harvard School of Public Health. Since 2005, she has served as Chief of the Center for Clinical Eye Research and Trials of the Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center. She is a Senior Investigator in the Vascular Cell Biology Section of the Joslin.

Alan Moses, MD, FACP
Chair of the Board of Directors, The diaTribe Foundation

Dr. Alan Moses is an independent consultant for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. Trained in internal medicine and endocrinology, he spent the major part of his academic career at Harvard doing bench and clinical research and clinical care and rising to a position of Professor of Medicine. Dr. Moses co-founded and directed the Clinical Investigator Training Program at Beth Israel Deaconess-Harvard Medical School-MIT. From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Moses served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the Joslin Diabetes Center with specific responsibility for the Joslin Clinic. He joined Novo Nordisk in 2004. During his 14 years at Novo Nordisk, Dr. Moses served in multiple roles beginning as Associate Vice President of Medical Affairs in the US and rising to the position of Senior Vice President and Global Chief Medical Officer working in Copenhagen. Dr. Moses earned his MD from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, worked for three years at the National Institutes of Health, completed his clinical endocrine/diabetes training at Tufts New England Medical Center, and studied Health Care Strategy at Harvard Business School. He retired from Novo Nordisk in June 2018. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of The diatribe Foundation since September 2018.

Julie Hsieh, PhD, MPH
Health Scientist, Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE), Office of the Commissioner, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Dr. Julie Hsieh is a Health Scientist for the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) in the Office of the Commissioner at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She supports the Research and Collaboration extramural research program that focuses on advancing the health of diverse populations and has a profound interest in developing/identifying strategies to improve public health among vulnerable populations. She had conducted research to determine whether the clinical trials population is reflective of disease populations in the United States by age, race, and ethnicity.
Trained as an infectious disease epidemiologist, Dr. Hsieh previously conducted studies of the incarcerated affected by the dual epidemics of opioid use/misuse and HIV/AIDS in the United States and Asia, including ethnic minority populations in rural China, that examined the intersections between their behaviors and the influences on their health. Leveraging training in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, Dr. Hsieh is dedicated to furthering the mission of OMHHE to engage with various organizations in conducting meaningful research projects for the benefit of racial and ethnic minority populations. Dr. Hsieh received her PhD from the University of California Los Angeles and her MPH from Yale University.
