It’s National Diabetes Awareness Month! Eight Ways to Get Involved, 463 Million Reasons to Care

Diabetes affects more than 463 million people worldwide. Take time during National Diabetes Awareness Month to connect with the community; here are eight simple ways to get involved

For those of you who live with diabetes, work in diabetes, or have a loved one with diabetes, you may know that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Each year during this month – and especially on November 14, World Diabetes Day – the community comes together to bring attention to diabetes and how it affects millions and millions of people in the United States and around the world. Through advocacy and awareness events, programs, and initiatives, the diabetes community uses this time to bring attention to the scale of this challenging condition. Together we can improve the lives of all people with diabetes and fight to reduce the impact of this global epidemic.

How can you make a difference? Join us in observing National Diabetes Awareness Month by getting involved in one (or more!) of these efforts:

  1. Find a World Diabetes Day event near you led by the International Diabetes Federation. This year there are over 142 events in 54 countries, and many of them are virtual.

  2. Post about National Diabetes Awareness Month on social media using hashtags #NDAM and #DiabetesAwarenessMonth.

  3. Check out the American Diabetes Association’s events here. Follow and participate in the We Stand Greater Than Diabetes campaign by using the hashtag #WeStandGreaterThan on social media.

  4. Participate in JDRF’s Celebrating the Power of Us campaign, which focuses on the power of the our community. Share your photo with #PowerofUS on social media. For World Diabetes Day, you can download social media graphics to celebrate and spotlight the role nurses play in diabetes care.

  5. Join the Beyond Type 1 community by participating in the #TheDropSpotted campaign. It’s an easy way to use your voice to make diabetes more visible. You can find awareness-raising resources here.

  6. Got Instagram? Participate in Leah’s Happy Diabetic 30-day challenge. Check out #happydiabeticchallenge to see what the diabetes community is sharing this month.

  7. Did you know diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions in children in the United States? Explore the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Taking Care of Youth Who Have Diabetes campaign, which includes tips for helping kids be active.

  8. Join diaTribe’s fight to eliminate diabetes stigma. Watch black-ish star Anthony Anderson (and other amazing speakers) at this year’s d20 Lightning Talks: Five Perspectives on Diabetes Stigma and learn more about addressing diabetes stigma in your community.
