Solvable Problems in Diabetes at EASD 2025

A Milestone Moment: Honoring Professor Tadej Battelino
This year marks a first: the presentation of diaTribe's inaugural Vanguard Leadership in Diabetes Award to Professor Tadej Battelino, a pioneer whose scientific vision and impact have reshaped the landscape of diabetes care.
The award will be presented by EASD President, Professor Chantal Mathieu, followed by an educational keynote by Professor Battelino, sharing clinically relevant insights on advancing outcomes in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Topics will include CGM adoption and interpretation, time in range, equity in access and implementation of new therapies, and pediatric innovation—all delivered with a focus on accelerating progress and reducing barriers- from lab to clinic to patient – making this an unforgettable highlight of the week in Vienna.
diaTribe is proud to present this award to Professor Battelino, who currently serves as Co-Chair of ATTD and Regional Chair of IDF-Europe. Our award has been created to recognize bold thinkers who are not just imagining a better future in diabetes but actively building it. There could be no more fitting recipient.
Tadej is the very definition of a vanguard—someone who moves ahead of the field, not just in theory but in action. In his pioneering work in continuous glucose monitoring, his leadership in pivotal clinical trials, and his tireless advocacy for earlier intervention and better care, Tadej has consistently asked: What problem are we trying to solve? And more importantly, how do we solve it now?
His career has spanned decades, but his energy remains that of someone who is just getting started. Tadej helped bring time in range from an obscure concept to a global standard. He was among the first to champion CGM use in young children. He’s pushed regulators, industry, clinicians, and health systems to think beyond A1c and toward real world outcomes that matter. And he has done all of this with profound humility, extraordinary generosity, and the fiercest commitment to patients.
Those of us who’ve had the privilege of working alongside him know how often he is the force behind real change—both in the clinic and in the global policy arena. His leadership has helped make real progress possible, particularly in pediatric diabetes care.

Professor Chantal Mathieu is a physician-scientist who has contributed to the field of diabetes and endocrinology through basic and clinical research. Her basic research work focuses on pathogenesis and prevention of type 1 diabetes. Prof. Mathieu’s clinical work involving new products and treatment paradigms in diabetes, such as new insulins, adjunct therapies, and diagnosis of gestational diabetes have made her a speaker in international fora. Prof. Mathieu coordinates the European project ‘INNODIA’ on biomarker discovery and intervention studies in type 1 diabetes. Prof. Mathieu is president of EASD and vice-president of the European Diabetes Forum. She also Leads the INNODIA consortium, a pan-European initiative under the EU’s Innovative Medicines Initiative, aimed at biomarker discovery and intervention in T1D.
