We've assembled a distinguished panel of experts to dive into the intricate interplay between metabolic health, lipid, and kidney function. Join us as we shed light on the critical connection between diabetes and kidney function, as well as other measures of health such as lipid panel/triglycerides and the intersection. We will discuss what you need to ask your doctor about monitoring and testing, as well as the latest advancements in lifestyle and therapeutic management.

Robert Eckel, MD, FAHA, FACC, FNLA
Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, Division of Cardiology; S/P Charles A. Boettcher II Chair in Atherosclerosis; University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Robert Eckel is the founder of the Lipoprotein Apheresis Program at University of Colorado.  Dr. Eckel earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and completed his residency at University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison, and fellowship in Metabolism and Endocrinology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.  With over 300 articles published in peer reviewed journals, he is also past president of the American Heart Association, Obesity Society, Association of Patient Oriented Research, and of Science & Medicine of the American Diabetes Association. He is a member of the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications and is on the Board of the American Diabetes Association.

 
 
 

Roopa Mehta, MBBS, MRCP
Metabolic Diseases Research Unit (UIEM), Department of Endocrinology, National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ), Mexico City, Mexico

Roopa Mehta is an endocrinologist and researcher in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition, Salvador Zubiran, in Mexico City. She is the director of the lipid clinic and the cardiovascular laboratory. She is an associate professor in both pre- and postgraduate endocrinology programs, and is a principal investigator for phase 3 clinical trials. Dr Mehta undertook her medical training at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, UK. She subsequently trained as an endocrinologist at the INCMNSZ. On completing the residency program, Dr Mehta subspecialized in diabetes and metabolism and gained further clinical and investigative experience rotating at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, MA, USA. She has a masters and PhD in medical sciences. She recently completed a research attachment at Imperial College, London, focusing on diabetes epidemiology. Her research interests include diabetes, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular risk. She has received the Alfonso Rivera Research Award (from the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology) and the Young Investigator Award (from the AACE). She is a member of the Mexican Academy of Medicine. She has been an invited speaker at ADA, IDF and AACE meetings. She is an editor for several diabetes journals (Current Diabetes Reports, Diabetic Medicine, Diabetes Therapy). Dr Mehta has authored and co-authored multiple publications in international journals in addition to numerous book chapters. She is a co-editor of a book for patients with diabetes – “Living with Diabetes: A Practical Manual”

 
Daniel Newman
Type One Diabetes Advocate, CKD survivor and Kidney Transplant Receiver, Host of @talkingtype1podcast
 

Daniel is the HR and Volunteer Manager at JDRF, The Type 1 Diabetes Medical Research charity. Daniel is a diabetes and kidney health advocate. He also hosts and produces The Talking Type 1 Podcast where he interviews people living with type 1 diabetes.

 
 
 

Ted Okerson MD, FACP, FACE
Senior Field Physician, AstraZeneca Biopharmaceuticals

Ted Okerson, MD, FACP, FACE is board-certified in Internal Medicine and as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension. Dr. Okerson graduated from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine and trained at the University of California Irvine where he also served as Chief Medical Resident followed by 19 years as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine. He has spent half his career in full-time clinical practice with the remainder of his career in part-time practice. He has over twenty years of experience in Clinical Development and Medical Affairs, with expertise in heart failure, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, obesity and diabetes.

Diana Isaacs, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, BCACP, CDCES, FADCES, FCCP
Director of Education and Training in Diabetes Technology, Cleveland Clinic

Diana Isaacs, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, BCACP, CDCES, FADCES, FCCP is an endocrine clinical pharmacy specialist and the Director of Education and Training in Diabetes Technology at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Isaacs earned her PharmD from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Philadelphia VA. Dr. Isaacs serves in leadership roles for several pharmacy and diabetes organizations. She served on the ADA Professional Practice Committee for 2020-2023, the committee that updates the ADA Standards of Care. She is a national board member of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES). Dr. Isaacs was awarded the Ohio Pharmacists Association Under 40 Award in 2019 and was the 2020 ADCES Diabetes Care and Education Specialist of the Year. In 2022, she was inducted into the SIUE Hall of Fame for her far-reaching contributions in patient care.
