Twitter Summary: Dexcom launches Android version of Follow app – allows parents, loved ones + caregivers to remotely monitor CGM data

Dexcom has launched an Android version of its Follow app, allowing parents, caregivers, and loved ones to remotely monitor CGM levels from patients wearing the Dexcom G4 Platinum Share Receiver. The app is available in the Google Play store here. Now those looking to remotely follow a patient’s glucose levels can choose between either the iPhone/Apple Watch or Android versions of the Dexcom Follow app. For the time being, patients themselves will still need an iPhone, as the Share2 app (which receives the glucose information from the Share Receiver and sends it to people using the Follow app) has not been approved for Android. Still, this Android option greatly expands the Follow app’s reach, as the majority of people using smart phones use an Android device.

Looking ahead, Dexcom’s new Gen 5 mobile platform is currently under FDA review and could receive approval by the end of the year. This system will bring CGM data straight into an iPhone app via a new Bluetooth transmitter, eliminating the need for the receiver (though patients will still be able to use the Share receiver if they want to). Gen 5 will initially only be iPhone-compatible, though an Android version is currently in the works (the exact timeline is still unclear). – AB/AJW
