Access to Affordable Insulin

The diaTribe Foundation Position Statement

The diaTribe Foundation affirms that every person with diabetes should have access to affordable insulin, as it is essential to health and survival. All stakeholders – including policymakers, manufacturers, employers, payors, pharmacies, and pharmacy benefit managers – have an ethical imperative to improve affordable insulin access for people with diabetes, in accordance with the following principles:

  • Universality: No person who needs insulin should be denied access. Access to life-saving medicine is a human right.
  • Accessibility: Every person should have access to the insulin that is most beneficial for their individual treatment needs, no matter where they live, what they earn, or who they are.
  • Affordability: What an individual pays for insulin at the pharmacy should be affordable – price should not impede health, survival, or well-being.
  • Equality: Out-of-pocket costs should be capped at a set monthly rate, regardless of how much insulin an individual requires.

The diaTribe Foundation is committed to improving the lives of people with diabetes and prediabetes and advocating for action. We believe it is critical to fight for the right of every person with diabetes to have access to insulin at an affordable cost.
