On October 14, Cellnovo announced the start of a usability study of its mobile-enabled insulin pump in the UK. The trial will essentially study how patients like using the new product. The study has enrolled 24 current pumpers, including children, and it will run until the end of 2013. The company plans to launch the system in the UK before the end of 2013 and release it more broadly in Europe following the launch. Cellnovo plans to file for FDA approval in the US in 2014.

The Cellnovo system consists of a unit worn on the body (pump, reservoir, tubing), a wireless color touchscreen handheld controller with an integrated blood glucose meter, and a web-based data management system. The system is similar to a patch pump like Insulet’s OmniPod, although the piece worn on the body requires a very short 0.4 inch (1 cm) infusion set. The remote monitoring and data management capabilities will be useful features, as users will be able to see all historic data from the handset and pump through an online web portal in near real time. The handheld will use a cellular data connection and can trigger text message alerts, which we think would be quite attractive for parents of young children in particular.
